At 18, he was one of five young musicians to receive the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship. That same year he was selected as a member of the All-American high school Grammy Jazz Band.

In 1997, the North High School graduate moved to New York City to attend the New School of Music where he met drummer Charlie Persip and began playing with Persip’s big band.
