Center kicks off session II of free kids’ activities (June 26, 2009) – The second session of free summer activities for kids kindergarten through sixth grade will begin Wednesday, July 1 at the Betty Strong Encounter Center. Session II includes music encounters; model keel-boat building; and Seaman the Dog mapping adventures. Admission and materials will be free. Registration is not required. Model Keelboat Building Adventures: 1 p.m. Wednesdays, July 1-29. Participants build models based on the vessel the Corps of Discovery poled up the Missouri River to Fort Mandan. The activity introduces kids to key places and people along the Lewis & Clark Trail. Instructors are Brent Wojcik and Christina Thomsen, 2009 Morningside College history major graduates; Lisa Serres, a graduate student in history at University of South Dakota; and Omar Lopez, a 2009 Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) graduate. Seaman the Dog’s Road Trip: 1 p.m. Thursdays, July 2-30. This fun mapping activity highlights the famous Newfoundland’s most notable experiences as recorded in the Journals of Lewis & Clark. Thomsen and Serres are instructors. Music Encounters: 1 p.m. Fridays, July 3 – 31 and Tuesday, Aug. 4. Under the direction of Nick McGraw and Annika Kolbo, senior Morningside College music education majors, kids create music using a variety of themes. The program is presented in partnership with the Morningside College Music Department. The Betty Strong Encounter Center is a private, non-profit cultural complex built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD).
