Stockyards DVD wins Telly Award (July 7, 2008) – “A Way of Life with Stanley Evans,” a DVD about Sioux City’s stockyards heritage, has won a bronze prize in the 2008 Telly Awards’ film and video competition.
The 13-minute production features Evans
as the narrator who takes viewers through
the Yards with stops that include the
Livestock Exchange Building lobby, “The
Highline,” the 1953 Floyd River flood with
commission men heroes, and the last cattle
auction in March 2002. It is shown daily in
the Stanley Evans Auditorium in the Betty
Strong Encounter Center on Sioux City’s
riverfront. The DVD was produced by G.R. Lindblade & Co., as a companion to the Yards books, “A Way of Life” volumes I and II, written by Marcia Poole and published by the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center Association. The Yards books and DVD project were funded by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). They are on sale at the Center. Contact rmovall@siouxcitylcic.com for more information. The DVD follows the daily workings of the central public market system and the dramatic changes that ended it as a way of life. A member of the “Yards family” for some 40 years, Evans offers insight into the camaraderie, competition and humor that made the Yards a unique place to work, do business and develop lasting friendships. George Lindblade videotaped interviews with Evans over several years. Evans was retired president and chairman of the board of the Live Stock National Bank, now Wells Fargo. His passion for preserving Yards history was the impetus for the Yards books. He died in December 2006. Founded in 1978, the Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as video and film productions. The Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and the Betty Strong Encounter Center, exit 149 off I-29, comprise a private, non-profit institution built and operated by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). Admission is free. For more information, call 712-224-5242 or log onto www.siouxcitylcic.com.
