Corey Fravel presents bag of tricks Sunday

(June 17, 2008) – The Center will present “It’s Magic” with Sioux Cityan Corey Fravel from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22. Admission to the drop-in show will be free.

The West Middle School eighth grader will entertain visitors with a range of card and other sleight-of-hand tricks and games. His program speaks to the Center’s growing interest in games of various cultures.

The Lewis & Clark Expedition recorded a number of observances of hiding games played by Native peoples. The object of these games was to fool opponents’ eyes while shifting game pieces among hiding places, either in hands or under a moccasin or other concealments. Competitors then guessed where a game piece was hidden.

The son of Lisa and Greg Fravel, Corey began performing magic shows at school. His act expanded into a full show and a wide variety of venues, including birthday parties, restaurants and the 2008 NAIA banquet.

Corey credits magician David Blaine with inspiring his interest in magic. Blaine remains the Sioux Cityan’s favorite magician.

The Betty Strong Encounter Center and adjoining Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center are located on Sioux City’s Missouri Riverfront, exit 149 off I-29. Admission is free. For more information, call 712-224-5242.
