Public invited to Mo. River clean-up meeting (May 9, 2008) – Final plans for the June 7 Missouri River clean-up day in the Sioux City area will be discussed at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 15 at the Center on the Missouri Riverfront. The public is invited to participate. The clean-up is drawing broad support from the public and private sectors. More than 500 people are expected to participate in the volunteer clean-up operation. Work will extend some 10 miles north and south of Sioux City. The project is being organized by Missouri River Relief, headquartered in Columbia, Mo. The non-profit has organized 37 clean-ups along 434 miles of the Missouri River. These efforts have removed more than 400 tons of solid waste from the river and involved more than 7,000 volunteers. The May 15 meeting is co-sponsored by the Betty Strong Encounter Center, Missouri River Relief and the Izaak Walton League of America.
