Hands-on family fishing clinic Sunday at the Center
(April 7, 2008) – The Center on the
Missouri Riverfront will offer a free
hands-on fishing event for kids, their
parents and grandparents at 2 p.m.
Sunday, April 13. Journal Siouxland
Outdoor editor Larry Myhre will present the
program. Myhre will cover: water safety; fishing regulations; ethics; fish identification; tackle; knot-tying; and how to assemble a rod, reel and tackle box. Participants will learn how to cast; how to hook a fish; and how to land a catch. If weather permits, Myhre will lead casting practice and casting contests outdoors. Prizes and handouts will be part of the event. "Fishing is a great way to spend more time with your children and grandchildren," Myhre said. "Even if you’ve never fished, learning together is fun and rewarding. Through fishing, you can build family memories that will last a lifetime." The Sunday event is part of an Encounter Center series designed to stir interest in the Missouri River as a unique setting for a rich diversity of life and recreation opportunities. Myhre, retired editor of The Journal, has lived along and fished the Missouri River for more than 40 years. He continues his association with The Journal as outdoor editor, producing news, features and photographs for Sunday editions. He also edits and writes for The Journal’s bimonthly “Siouxland Outdoors” publication. Myhre is affiliated with Outdoorsmen Productions, a publishing and TV production company headed by Gary Howey in Hartington, Neb. He’s co-host of the Outdoorsmen Adventures TV show and works with Howey on other outdoors promotion, including guiding, seminar presentations and public relations. As a freelance writer, Myhre has published in numerous magazines, including Fur-Fish-Game, Fly Fisherman, Fins and Feathers, and Outdoor Life. He’s a frequent contributor to Iowa Game and Fish, and Great Plains Game and Fish magazines. He has been an active member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America for 27 years and is a member of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. The Encounter Center’s Missouri River programs are presented in cooperation with the Izaak Walton League of America, one of the nation's oldest conservation organizations. Izaak Walton has almost 300 chapters dedicated to caring for the country’s natural heritage and improving outdoor recreational opportunities. The Betty Strong Encounter Center is a private, non-profit institution built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). It is connected to the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center on the Missouri Riverfront, exit 149 off I-29. Admission, all programs, exhibits and activities are free.
