Center offers gourd bowl painting class

(March 28, 2008) – The Betty Strong Encounter Center will offer a gourd bowl painting class at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6. The class is open to all ages. Admission and materials are free; registration is not required.

“Gourds had many traditional uses for Native peoples and European immigrants to this area,” says instructor Donna Kennedy. “They served as vessels for holding medicines, water, herbals and game pieces. They were embellished according to their function and the people who used them.”

Participants will use non-toxic paints and stains to decorate prepared gourd bowls. They will learn about designs from various Native traditions and then use those designs as a reference for creating their own designs.

Kennedy joined the Encounter Center staff in February. She was trained as a historic painter and restoration artist at the Shelburne Museum, Shelburne, Vt., where she worked for seven years. Her Native teachers have included Narragansett and Abenaki, Mohawk and Lakota elders. She is of Seneca, Abenaki and Irish descent.

The Betty Strong Encounter Center is joined to the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center on the Missouri Riverfront, exit 149 off I-29. It was built and is sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). For more information, call 712-224-5242.
