East High students to entertain at Senior Day

(March 19, 2008) The Betty Strong Encounter Center will honor Siouxland seniors with a free performance by award-winning East High School Large Group Speech students at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 27 in the Stanley Evans Auditorium. A reception will follow. The event will be free.

The students will perform pieces from the popular musical comedies “Nunsense” and “Seussical.”

The event celebrates America’s musical theater heritage which is rooted in the colonial period and pre-dates Lewis & Clark. Early musical stage performances evolved to become the Broadway musical of today, a form that has been described as uniquely American.

“Nunsense” got its start on off-Broadway and went on to international success. Phyllis Diller, Kay Ballard, Pat Carroll and Peggy Cass are among the luminaries who’ve starred in the hit musical comedy.

“Seussical” is based on some of the favorite Dr. Seuss stories, written by Ted Geisel. The musical made its Broadway debut in 2000 and has since become a favorite of educational and community theater.

“These energetic high school students love what they do and they want the audience to enjoy the story and the music,” says Shelley Molstad, East High school teacher and speech coach. “Musical theater is a great way to join the generations in a collaboration of performer and audience.”

The Betty Strong Encounter Center is connected to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, exit 149 off I-29. It is a private, non-profit institution built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD) and dedicated to commemorating a history of encounters.
