Center presents Mexican-heritage games,
music of Peru

      (March 6, 2008) – The Betty Strong Encounter Center will present “Old Things, New People: A Celebration of Two Latino Cultures,” from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 15. The event will be free.

     The afternoon will offer games of Mexico and music of Peru. The event was inspired by the Center’s interest in promoting dialogue, understanding and peace among all people who make their home in Siouxland.

     Omar Lopez, a native of Tecoman, Colima in Mexico, will lead visitors in La Loteria from 1 to 3 p.m. in the activity room. La Loteria is often described as Mexican bingo. Lopez will demonstrate other Mexican games. Prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served.

     Lopez, an Encounter Center staff member, moved to Siouxland in 2003. He was trained as a pharmacy technician at Western Iowa Tech Community College (y College (WITCC). He is continuing his education with the goal of becoming a physician.

     Guitarist Manuel Cabrejos, from Lima, Peru, will play traditional Peruvian music on acoustic guitar at 3 p.m. in the Stanley Evans Auditorium. “In Peru, there is great love of music,” says Cabrejos who has played guitar most of his life.

    A graduate of Colegio De La Salle Lima, Cabrejos also will demonstrate the cajon, a percussion instrument of Peru rooted in African culture. The spoons, a percussion instrument of Eastern European origin, will be included in the program.

           The Betty Strong Encounter Center is a private, non-profit institution built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc.
