Myhre takes fishing enthusiasts on
Mo River encounter

(Feb. 18, 2008) – Siouxland outdoor writer Larry Myhre will present “Fishing the Mighty Mo” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Betty Strong Encounter Center on the Missouri Riverfront. Admission will be free.

In the illustrated program, Myhre will share his insight into finding and catching channel catfish, flathead catfish, walleye, sauger, smallmouth bass and other fish. Myhre, the retired editor of the Sioux City Journal, has lived along and fished the Missouri River for more than 40 years.

'The key to catching fish on the Missouri is to understand the prime time to fish for each species throughout the year,” Myhre says. “With the exception of catfish, population densities are not high. Understanding seasonal movements, particularly of saugers and walleyes, is important to success. There are times during the year when these fish are concentrated in very predictive areas and are easy to catch.”

Fishing enthusiasts don’t need a boat to successfully fish the Missouri River. While they can move through the water quicker in a boat, they can find plenty to catch from along the bank. “With few exceptions, most of the game fish locations are right along the bank. You just need to know what to look for,” Myhre says.

The program will concentrate on fishing the Missouri River in the Sioux City area. However, Myhre will open the discussion to fishing anywhere on the river system. Myhre’s third presentation, “River Stories,” will be on March 9.

Myhre continues his association with The Journal as outdoors editor. He produces news, features and photographs for Sunday editions. He also edits and writes for The Journal’s bimonthly “Siouxland Outdoors” publication.

Myhre is affiliated with Outdoorsmen Productions, a publishing and TV production company headed by Gary Howey in Hartington, Neb. He’s co-host of the Outdoorsmen Adventures TV show and works with Howey on other outdoors promotion, including guiding, seminar presentations and public relations.

As a freelance writer, Myhre’s work has been published in a number of magazines, including Fur-Fish-Game, Fly Fisherman, Fins and Feathers, and Outdoor Life. He’s a frequent contributor to Iowa Game and Fish, and Great Plains Game and Fish magazines.

He has been an active member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America for 27 years and is a member of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers.

Missouri River programs are presented in cooperation with the Izaak Walton League of America, one of the nation's oldest conservation organizations. Izaak Walton has almost 300 chapters dedicated to caring for the country’s natural heritage and improving outdoor recreational opportunities.

The Betty Strong Encounter Center is a private, non-profit institution built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). It is connected to the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center on the Missouri Riverfront, exit 149 off I-29. Admission, all programs, exhibits and activities are free.
