Myhre to present “Fish of the Mighty Mo” (Jan. 31, 2008) – Siouxland outdoor writer Larry Myhre will present “Fishes of the Missouri River” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Betty Strong Encounter Center. The illustrated program will be the first in a series designed to stir interest in the river as a resource for sports fishing and other recreation and as a unique setting for a rich diversity of life. Admission will be free.
Myhre will discuss the dazzling array
of fish that make their home in the river.
He’ll examine their history, habitat
requirements, interesting facts, and their
status in the river today. “Some fish have ancestors that can be traced back 300 to 400 million years. They’ve been found in the Missouri’s swirling waters since the age of the glaciers. Others are newcomers - invasives that threaten the welfare of native species,” says Myhre who recently retired after 18 years as editor of The Sioux City Journal. “In between are a number of fish important to the river’s food chain and to recreational pursuits of anglers.” The Center’s fishing series is inspired by Lewis & Clark journals which mention 31 species of fish. In two days, Aug. 15-16, 1804, the expedition caught more than a thousand fish while the explorers were camped along the Missouri River just downstream from present-day Sioux City. They named that place “Fish Camp.” The journals list the fish they caught, including small catfish, perhaps channel catfish. The Feb. 10 program will be the first of three sessions Myhre will present in the Stanley Evans Auditorium. “Fishing in the Missouri River” is set for Feb. 24; and “A Conversation about the Missouri River” will be presented on March 9.” In partnership with the Izaak Walton League, the Center will present a program on cottonwood trees on Feb. 17; and a panel discussion on invasive species on March 2. Myhre continues his association with The Journal as outdoors editor. He produces a full page of news, features and photographs for Sunday editions. He also edits and writes for The Journal’s bimonthly “Siouxland Outdoors” publication. Myhre is affiliated with Outdoorsmen Productions, a publishing and TV production company headed by Gary Howey in Hartington, Neb. He’s co-host of the Outdoorsmen Adventures TV show and works with Howey on other outdoors promotion, including guiding, seminar presentations and public relations. As a freelance writer, Myhre’s work has been published in a number of magazines, including Fur-Fish-Game, Fly Fisherman, Fins and Feathers, and Outdoor Life. He’s a frequent contributor to Iowa Game and Fish, and Great Plains Game and Fish magazines. He has been an active member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America for 27 years and is a member of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. The Betty Strong Encounter Center is a private, non-profit institution built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD) located on the Missouri Riverfront, exit 149 off I-29. Admission, all programs, exhibits and activities are free. For more information, call 712-2245242.
