Stockyards book volume II attracts (Jan. 3, 2008) – “A Way of Life II: Stories from the Yards” has sold more than 500 copies since its Dec. 7 release. The 212-page book is the second volume in the Stockyards history set, written by Marcia Poole and published by the Sioux City Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center Association. The first volume has sold more than 1,900 copies since its May 2006 release, and won numerous book awards. It also inspired the recently released Yards DVD, “A Way of Life with Stanley Evans,” produced by G.R. Lindblade & Co. “The Sioux City Stockyards closed almost six year ago but deep emotional ties endure among thousands of people who knew the Yards as a way of life,” says Poole. “The Yards family includes farmers and truckers, commission firm staff and Stockyards Company employees, cattle dealers and order buyers, packinghouse employees and bank tellers. It extends to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Yards family who understand that the central public market was the economic titan of the Sioux City area for many decades.” Stanley Evans, who was president and chairman of the board of the Live Stock National Bank, was adviser for both books until his death in December 2006. George Lindblade and Christine McAvoy, of G.R. Lindblade & Co., were photo editors. Lou Ann Lindblade designed both books which were printed by Anderson Brothers of Sioux City. While Volume I gives readers an overview of more than 150 years of livestock marketing history, Volume II devotes chapters to Yards luminaries, including Fred L. Eaton who revived the Yards after the depression of 1893. Eaton came to Sioux City from New England in 1894 to represent investors who had sunk millions into the promise of the Yards and other Sioux City projects. Another chapter looks at John “Jiggs” Donohue, a legendary commission man and Yards promoter. Donohue’s connections brought Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey to Sioux City as part of his Yards promotions. Volume II includes a chapter on the Swift & Co. strike of 1938-39, one of the longest packers’ strikes in the nation’s history. The labor chapter also looks at the nationwide packers’ strike of January 1946 which also idled Cudahy and Armour. Volume II continues with The Live Stock National Bank robbery of 1935; the legendary commission men; Don Cunningham, known as the “voice of the Yards”; and dozens of sidebars on a diverse range of Yards topics. Family memories figure into both books. More than 70 people and institutions contributed photographs and memorabilia for volume II. The Yards books and DVD are sold at the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and adjoining Betty Strong Encounter Center, as well as siouxcitygifts.com. Shipping is available.
