(April 20, 2007) – The Center will present a series of three creative dramatics sessions for students, 8 to 12 years old, at 1:30 p.m. on May 5, 12 and 19. The free sessions will use the Center’s permanent and changing exhibits to inspire students to create and present stories about their communities, countries and heritage. Themes will explore a variety of qualities and principles, including loyalty, integrity, bravery, friendship and respect for other people and the natural world. “Theater is a wonderful tool for getting children involved in history,” says Jenna Soleo Shanks, the Center’s creative dramatics consultant. “This program will offer opportunities for children to perform and also explore a variety of other art forms, including writing and drawing.” Stimulating children’s imaginations is at the heart of the program. The sessions also will be opportunities for children to experience collaboration and cooperation involved in the creative process. “Unlike computer games, creative dramatics call on children to play together, to work together and create together,” says Marcia Poole, director. “They don’t merely sit and watch; they participate.” The sessions will use a variety of materials, including costume pieces, props and drawing materials. All materials will be furnished by the Center. Creative Dramatics was conceived as an expression that serves the Center’s permanent mission of “Commemorating a history of encounters.” Soleo-Shanks has worked at The Julliard School and taught at St. John’s University, Marymount Manhattan College and City University of New York (CUNY). She is completing her doctorate in theater at CUNY and teaches at Briar Cliff University and Morningside College. She has worked in amateur and professional theater settings, with Academy Award-winning actors and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwrights. “I am most at home working with kids, performing for and with kids and creating acting and playwriting workshops for young people,” she says. For more information about Creative Dramatics, call the Center at 712-224-5242. The Center is located on Sioux City’s Missouri Riverfront, exit 149 off I-29; open 9 a.m .to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission, exhibits and programs are free and open to all people. The Center was built and is sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD).
