(April 3, 2007) –“The Dynamic River,” the last in a series of three programs about the Missouri River, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at the Center. The free program will be presented by Tim Cowman, Natural Resources Administrator with the South Dakota Geological Survey. Two segments along the South Dakota-Nebraska border are designated by Congress as the Missouri National Recreational River. Many natural properties of the river are still in place in these segments, says Cowman. “Erosion is active, water levels fluctuate, and meanders move.” Historical photos dating back to 1941 and historical maps that predate the Lewis & Clark Expedition show former river channels and movement of river meanders. Understanding how the river has behaved helps identify some of the lost cultural artifacts of the Missouri. “It also helps us understand how the river will affect us in the future.” Cowman uses historical maps and imagery to analyze the dynamics of the Missouri River. He is involved in the implementation of geographic information systems (GIS) in South Dakota State government and assists local governments with GIS projects. The Center’s series focuses on the Missouri River as a cultural and natural resource important to the Great Plains and Midwest regions. “Understanding how the river has behaved helps identify some of the lost cultural artifacts of the Missouri,” says Cowman. “It also helps us understand how the river will affect us in the future.” On Sunday, May 20, Cowman will present a program on recreational uses of the river. Cowman has a master’s degree in Natural Sciences from the University of South Dakota and is a native of southeastern South Dakota. The Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, exit 149 off I-29, is a private, non-profit institution built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). Admission, all programs, exhibits and activities are free and open to all people. For more information, call Marcia Poole, director, 712-224-5242 or visit www.siouxcitylcic.com
