student awards, theater & Seaman (Nov. 24, 2006) – The Center will celebrate the holidays with an open house from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. The event will present Theater-in-a-Trunk creative dramatics for kids, their parents and grandparents; an awards ceremony for winners of the Center’s annual holiday card contest; a special appearance by Seaman the Newfoundland Dog; and a gift drawing for all children who attend. Admission will be free.
The awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. will announce winners of the Center’s 2006 Holiday Picture Contest” and unveil the official 2006 Holiday Card. This year’s theme was inspired by the Center’s book, “A Way of Life: A Story of the Sioux City Stockyards, Vol I.” Students focused on holiday traditions and celebrations from all cultures within the theme of Siouxland’s farm and livestock marketing heritage, including raising livestock and crops; traditional Native gardening; and the role of trucking and railroads in agriculture. The Center’s Theater-in-a-Trunk presentation will begin at 2 p.m. in the Keelboat Theate. The program uses playwriting and production dynamics to involve children in the creative process. The event will be led by a company of adult actors who will bring to life a Corps of Discovery story under the direction of artistic director Jenna Soleo-Shanks. Children in the audience will be invited to participate by reaching into a vintage trunk for costume pieces and props, such as a uniform, animal “horns,” or an imaginary “Missouri River.” As the children “try on” their roles, characters will take shape and the story will unfold. Seaman the Newfoundland will be on hand to greet visitors from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the atrium. He joined the Center’s staff in December 2003 when he was 3 months old and is a member of the Todd and Kathy Ellison family of Sioux City. Children may draw for holiday gifts in the Spirit of Discovery Store from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, exit 149 off I-29, is a private, non-profit institution built and operated by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). Admission, all programs, exhibits and activities are free. For more information call 712-224-5242 or log onto www.siouxcitylcic.com.
