Stockyards book inspires holiday picture contest

(Oct. 25, 2006) - The Center invites Siouxland students to enter the “2006 Holiday Picture Contest.” One picture will be selected as this year’s official holiday card.

Students can focus on holiday traditions and celebrations from all cultures within this year’s theme of Siouxland’s farm and livestock marketing heritage. The theme was inspired by the book “A Way of Life: A Story of the Sioux City Stockyards, Vol. I,” published this year by the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center Association.

Students may create art based on farm life and other aspects of Siouxland as a provider of food for our nation and world in the past, present and future. Suggestions include pictures of people raising livestock and crops; traditional Native gardening; and the role of trucking and railroads in agriculture. Students may enter in one of three divisions: kindergarten through second grade; third through fifth grades; or sixth through eighth grades.

Students can enter by creating a picture in any medium on 8.5-by-11.5-inch paper. The picture should use a farm or related theme as the dominant element. Submissions should be postmarked or delivered by Nov. 13 to: Holiday Picture Contest, Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, 900 Larsen Park Road, Sioux City, Iowa 51103; or send a jpg to mpoole@siouxcitylcic.com.

Three winners in each division will be awarded prizes, including five uncirculated Sacagawea gold dollars, a Louisiana Purchase holiday ornament, and related educational materials. The grand prize winner will earn 10 uncirculated Sacajawea dollars. Winners will be announced at the Center’s Holiday Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3.
