Tour Formats

The Lewis & Clark Tour

  • Limit of 15-20 students;
  • Extensive tour appropriate for students, fourth through twelfth grades;
  • Lasts approximately 1.5 hours;
  • Morning and afternoon tours available, Tuesday through Friday;
  • Each student will receive a visitor's journal to be completed during the tour.

The Corps Tour

  • Limit 20-30 students;
  • Less extensive tour appropriate for second through twelfth grades;
  • Lasts approximately 1.5 hours;
  • Morning and afternoon tours available, Tuesday through Friday;
  • Each student will receive a visitor's journal to be completed during free time.

Self-Guided Tour

  • 30 or more students;
  • A brief introduction. Students are then free to interact with the exhibits under chaperones' supervision;
  • No time limit;
  • Morning and afternoon times are available, Tuesday through Friday;
  • Each student may complete a visitor's journal during their visit.

 

Teacher Preparation for the Tour

Before You Visit

  • Request a tour or a visit by calling the Center at 712-224-5242, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
  • You will receive a reply with information about scheduling and confirming your tour;
  • Prepare for your tour by reviewing Lewis & Clark materials, including: Setting the Stage: a General Overview; President Jefferson's Instructions; Some Highlights of the Journey; and Short Biographies of Expedition Personnel.

Arrival at the Center

  • School groups are asked to arrive promptly at their scheduled time;
  • A group coordinator or chaperone (one per every 10 students) must accompany students.

During Your Visit

  • Chaperones must supervise students throughout the visit;
  • A student who leaves the group must be accompanied by an adult;
  • Teachers are asked to sign the guest book located at the front desk before leaving.
     

Conduct at the Center

  • If your group will be more than 10 minutes late, please call the Center at 712-224-5242;
  • Provide one supervisor/chaperone for every 10 students;
  • Do not bring lunches or backpacks into the Center;
  • Remind students to refrain from running.
