Gallagher’s ‘Stories from the Road’ Feb. 19

Date: 02/20/2012

(Feb. 8, 2012) – Siouxland storytelling will take center stage when Sioux City Journal award-winning journalist Tim Gallagher presents “Stories from the Road” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Betty Strong Encounter Center. Admission will be free.

Gallagher will describe and illustrate how he meets people, engages them in conversation and writes stories about these memorable encounters for The Journal. The program aims at inspiring Siouxlanders to treasure their own family and community stories.
“Tim encourages us to spend time sharing our stories with one another - to treasure our history together,” says Marcia Poole, director of the Center.
Gallagher has a long association with the Encounter Center and the adjoining Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. His stories are part of “Remember Us,” the current exhibition of Jim Lee photos commemorating Siouxland cemeteries. He wrote Siouxland veterans’ stories for the Center’s exhibit, “Our Stories: World War II Veterans Remember Extraordinary Times.”
Gallagher joined The Journal in 1999. He was named the 2008 Iowa Newspaper Columnist of the Year by the Associated Press. His recent work was cited by judges overseeing contests for both the Iowa Newspaper Association and Iowa Associated Press Managing Editors. He co-wrote Iowa’s top breaking-news story in 2011, one that detailed how officials and residents escaped the fury of a tornado that tore through Mapleton, Iowa, on April 9.
Gallagher is a graduate of Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, and resides in Moville, Iowa, with his wife, Jill, and their five children.
The Betty Strong Encounter Center and adjoining Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, exit 149 off I-29, comprise a private, non-profit cultural complex built and sustained by Missouri River Historical Development, Inc. (MRHD). Admission and programs are free. For more information, call 712-224-5242 or visit www.siouxcitylcic.com.
