WORKSHOP DAYS
for "Story Time with Lewis & Clark" Art Contest

1-3 p.m. Saturday, February 22 and March 21

The Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center invites preschool through sixth grade students to enter “Story Time with Lewis & Clark” art contest. The entry deadline is April 1. Prizes will be awarded.

Two drop-in workshops will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Mar. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Center. Students needing help to start or finish their art pieces are welcome to attend. Art supplies and treats will be furnished.

This year’s annual art contest is inspired by stories. Traveling over 4,000 miles in the 1800s, the Lewis & Clark Expedition’s adventures could easily be mistaken for a tall tale. Artists are invited to imagine what it would be like if the Captains, or any of the crew, found themselves magically transported into a scene of the artists’ favorite book or movie. Artists then create a picture of this scene, adding any details they like.

The Expedition’s story has been retold many times in the last 200 years. Now, artists will have the chance to add a whole new spin to the Captains’ adventures. “Artists can really think outside the box for this theme,” says Sara Olson, the Center’s Education Coordinator. “For example, you could imagine the Captains in the story Cinderella, frantically trying on glass slippers.”

Students may enter in one of three divisions: pre-school through first grade; second and third grades; fourth through sixth grades. Artwork must be original and submitted by April 1 to the Sioux City Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, 900 Larsen Park Road, Sioux City, Iowa 51103 or to SOlson@siouxcitylcic.com.
